Bold and italic text for LinkedIn and X

Social & copy

Select part of your text and make it bold, italic, underlined and more, then copy it.

Select words and pick a style. With nothing selected, a style applies to all the text. Ctrl/Cmd+B is bold, Ctrl/Cmd+I is italic. Pick a style again to remove it.

Use sparingly. Screen readers and search often read these characters poorly or as separate symbols. Keep them for a few words of emphasis, never for a whole post or for key information. Only Latin letters (and digits in some styles) are styled; other alphabets, accents and emoji stay as they are.

Type or paste text on the left and pick a style.

Questions

How does this bold and italic text work?

It is not a font. The styled letters are separate, standard Unicode characters (the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block) that look like bold or italic letters, so they can be pasted into a plain text box. Most apps display them, but some fonts and screen readers handle them poorly, so check your post before publishing.

Are they accessible and searchable?

Often not. Screen readers may read them as separate symbols or skip them, and search may not match them to the plain words. Use them sparingly for emphasis, and never for a whole post or for key information such as dates, prices or links.

Which letters and digits are covered?

The Latin letters A to Z and a to z. Digits are styled only where Unicode has them (bold, sans bold, double-struck and monospace). Accented letters, other alphabets, emoji and punctuation pass through unchanged.

How do underline and strikethrough work?

They add a combining line character after each letter, so the line is drawn by the viewer and can look different between apps. Spaces and emoji are skipped. Pressing the button again removes the line.

Can I get plain text back, and is my text uploaded?

Clear formatting turns every styled letter and digit back to plain text and removes underline and strikethrough, on the selection or on everything when nothing is selected. Nothing is uploaded; your text stays in your browser.
