PDF to text

PDF

Pull the text out of a PDF, page by page, right in your browser.

Choose a PDF to see its text here. Each page is read in order.

How it works

Extract the selectable text from a PDF. Copy it or save it as .txt or Markdown, with optional page separators. Runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

  1. Choose a PDF.
  2. Pick plain text or Markdown, and whether to mark where each page starts.
  3. Copy the text or download it.

Questions

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. The text is read on your device, in this browser tab. Nothing you choose leaves it.

Why does a page say it has no selectable text?

That page is probably a scanned image, so there is no text inside it to read. This tool does not do OCR (turning pictures of text into text).

What does "join hyphen-broken lines" do?

When a word is split across two lines with a hyphen, such as "exam-" then "ple", it is put back together as "example". A hyphen before a capital letter or a digit is left alone.

Will the layout match the PDF?

No. You get the text in reading order, one block per page. Columns, tables and images are not reproduced.

Can I read a password-protected PDF?

No. Remove the password first, then choose the file again.
